Raleigh City Museum, Raleigh

The City of Raleigh Museum (COR Museum) serves as the cultural and historical centerpiece of Raleigh, dedicated to preserving and showcasing the city's rich heritage. Nestled in the historic 1874 Briggs Hardware Building on Fayetteville Street, the museum offers a compelling glimpse into Raleigh’s past through a variety of engaging exhibits and educational programs—all free to the public.

The museum’s inception dates back to 1990, when Raleigh historian Mary Cates began rallying support to establish a city-focused museum, following the vision of the late Beth Crabtree. By 1991, the initiative gained momentum, and in 1993, the museum opened its first exhibit in the Borden Building at Fred Fletcher Park. Five years later, in 1998, the museum found its permanent home on the first floor of the restored Briggs Hardware Building, where it continues to welcome visitors to explore Raleigh's history.

The museum’s exhibits delve into various facets of the city’s history. Notable displays include Let Us March On: Journey Towards Civil Rights, a powerful exhibit that documents Raleigh's journey toward racial equality between the mid-1950s and mid-1970s. Another highlight is Our War: Voices of Raleigh’s World War II Veterans, which presents personal stories of Raleigh residents who experienced the war from different perspectives, offering a vivid portrayal of wartime Raleigh.

Raleigh Then, Raleigh Now, Raleigh Next takes visitors on a 200-year journey through the city’s evolution, showcasing historical artifacts and images. Interactive kiosks further enhance the experience by allowing visitors to explore historical photographs and learn more about the city’s transformation.

Beyond these core exhibits, the museum frequently updates its offerings to cover diverse topics, from local politics and historical maps to the vibrant Indian community and Raleigh’s burgeoning music scene.

Before leaving, visitors can browse the Museum Store for uniquely Raleigh gifts, such as locally produced Videri Chocolate and specialty coffee from the Raleigh Coffee Company, visiting the City of Raleigh Museum is a comprehensive and memorable experience for anyone looking to connect with the city’s history.
