Rancho San Rafael Park, Reno
Rancho San Rafael Regional Park is Reno’s largest and most multifaceted urban park, covering nearly 600 acres just northwest of downtown. Once part of a working ranch, the area now blends landscaped lawns with wetlands, pasture grasses, and high desert terrain, creating a natural retreat at the edge of the city. The park extends across McCarran Boulevard, connecting visitors to the Peavine Mountain foothills and miles of hiking and biking trails. Its year-round appeal lies in the variety of spaces it offers—quiet picnic spots, playgrounds, sports areas, and scenic nature trails.
A major draw is the Wilbur D. May Center, which includes both a museum filled with global curiosities—from Egyptian relics to African masks—and a tranquil arboretum and botanical garden. Nearby, Herman’s Pond, the historic Ranch House, and the Basque Sheepherder Monument add cultural depth to the landscape. Other features include a disc golf course, a dog park, five reservable picnic pavilions, and the Nevada Farms and Families Area (formerly Great Basin Adventure), once known for its interactive exhibits and mini-zoo.
Throughout the year, Rancho San Rafael plays host to community events, most famously the Great Reno Balloon Race, which fills the skies with color each September. Smaller seasonal festivals and local gatherings also take place, drawing families, outdoor enthusiasts, and tourists alike. Whether visiting for a relaxing afternoon or an all-day celebration, the park offers something for every interest—making it a central piece of Reno’s recreational life.
