Rashtriya Sabha Griha, Kathmandu

Rashtriya Sabha Griha, Kathmandu

The Rashtriya Sabha Griha, which translates to "City Hall" or "National Assembly Hall," is a significant venue located in Kathmandu, Nepal. Established as the first public building in the area dedicated to indoor functions, it quickly became a cornerstone for local cultural and public life. Rashtriya Sabha Griha has hosted a variety of events including speeches, exhibitions, and cultural presentations. The establishment of this venue fulfilled a long-held desire among the locals for a dedicated space that could support large gatherings and diverse activities.

In terms of Nepal's political framework, the Rashtriya Sabha Griha should not be confused with the Rashtriya Sabha, which is the upper house of the Federal Parliament of Nepal. The latter is part of a bicameral legislative system alongside the House of Representatives, the lower house. The National Assembly consists of 59 members, with eight members elected from each of Nepal’s seven provinces by respective electoral colleges, and three appointed by the President upon government recommendation. Members of the National Assembly serve staggered six-year terms, ensuring continuity by having the term of one-third of the members expire every two years.

This assembly structure was outlined in the Constitution of Nepal promulgated on 20 September 2015, following two Constituent Assembly elections. The current bicameral system replaced the unicameral Interim Legislature established in 2007, which itself followed the dissolution of the earlier National Assembly under the 1990 Constitution. This marked a significant shift from the panchayat system to a more democratic parliamentary framework, reflecting Nepal's evolving political landscape.
