Riasc Monastic Settlement, Dingle

Riasc Monastic Settlement, Dingle

Riasc Monastic Settlement is a significant archaeological site located 1 km east of Ballyferriter in County Kerry, Ireland. This early medieval monastic site, now in ruins, is a testament to Ireland's ancient monastic tradition, dating back to as early as the 6th century. Despite the passage of time, the site retains its historical essence through the remnants of low walls and a notable cross-slab standing stone at its center, emblematic of its spiritual past.

The settlement was extensively excavated in the 1970s, revealing a complex that includes the foundations of a church, several round houses, a workshop area with evidence of iron, bronze, and possibly glass working, two graveyards from different periods, a possible burial shrine, and multiple cross-inscribed stones. Notably, one of these stones, positioned at the entrance, dates back to the second half of the 6th century and carries a short inscription, "DNE," a Latin abbreviation for "Domine" (Lord), linking it with the broader Christian tradition of the time.

A variety of artifacts and cross-inscribed stones discovered during the excavations are currently on display at the West Kerry Museum (Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne) in Ballyferriter, offering visitors a closer look at the monastic life that once flourished here. The museum also provides educational worksheets for children and an informative leaflet about the site, enhancing the visitor experience for families looking to explore this historical landmark.

Free of charge and open to the public, the Riasc Monastic Settlement offers a profound glimpse into Ireland's early Christian era, showcasing the religious, cultural, and technological advancements of its inhabitants. Its serene ruins, set against the picturesque backdrop of County Kerry, invite reflection and exploration, making it a must-visit for those interested in Ireland's rich monastic heritage.
