Richard Wagner Museum, Lucerne

The Richard Wagner Museum is a significant cultural site located in Lucerne, situated on the shores of Lake Lucerne in the Tribschen district. It holds historical significance as it was the residence of the renowned composer Richard Wagner from 1866 to 1872 and was subsequently transformed into a museum.

Originally constructed in the 15th century, the building was later acquired by the Am Rhyn family during the 18th century. Its present external appearance largely dates back to around 1800.

Wagner stayed at this villa from April 1866, where he completed famous operas like "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" and "Siegfried" and worked on "Götterdämmerung." Cosima, Franz Liszt's daughter, joined him, and they had two children, Eva and Siegfried, here. After Cosima's divorce from Hans von Bülow, they married in Lucerne in 1870, and "Siegfried Idyll" premiered on the villa's staircase on December 25 of that year.

Wagner relocated to Bayreuth in 1872 with the intention of building a theater there. Afterward, the villa remained mostly vacant, except for occasional summer rentals. In 1931, the City of Lucerne purchased the house and the surrounding parkland from the Am Rhyn family. The villa was then opened as a museum in 1933.

In 1938, the inaugural Lucerne Festival commenced with a concert held in the villa's gardens, conducted by Arturo Toscanini. This festival included performances of Wagner's music.

The museum's ground floor features five rooms dedicated to an exhibition that showcases the life and works of the composer. It houses historical photographs, paintings, memorabilia, and original manuscripts. Additionally, visitors can find a bronze bust of Wagner created by Fritz Schaper and the composer's Erard grand piano, manufactured in 1858.

Cultural events are occasionally held in the ground floor's salon, including chamber concerts where Wagner's grand piano takes center stage.
