Riga Zoo, Riga

Riga Zoo, situated in the picturesque Mežaparks neighborhood alongside the tranquil Ķīšezers Lake, stands as a prominent city-owned zoo in Riga. Established in 1912, the zoo has grown from its initial collection of 267 animals across 88 species on 41 acres to now housing approximately 4,000 animals of nearly 500 species. The zoo attracts between 250,000 to 300,000 visitors each year, highlighting its status as a significant attraction in the region.

Throughout its history, Riga Zoo has faced challenges, including temporary closures during World War I and World War II, reopening in 1933 and 1944, respectively. Post-World War II, it became a leading zoo within the Soviet Union, notably adding an aquarium in 1950. Following Latvia's independence in 1991, although visitor numbers initially decreased, they have since recovered, supported by several developmental projects that helped maintain its appeal.

In 1992, the zoo became a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, marking a significant step in its commitment to conservation and animal welfare standards. A notable expansion in 2002 further enhanced its facilities and offerings.

The zoo also operates a branch called "Cīruļi" in the Liepāja District, Kalvene parish, established in 1996. This extension covers 135 hectares (330 acres) and supports the zoo’s conservation and breeding programs. Recent developments at Riga Zoo include the addition of the African Savannah exhibit in 2019, featuring species like geladas, impalas, zebras, and elands. The Giraffe house, built in 2007, is a part of this exhibit, adding to the diversity and educational value of the zoo.

The zoo announced a transformative plan in 2022 called "Masterplan 2035," which aims to reinvent Riga Zoo as a four-season park. This ambitious plan involves seven stages of development, with "Himalaya" being the first. This phase focuses on creating immersive and authentic experiences for visitors, featuring exhibitions of species such as the snow leopard, manul, takin, and bearded vultures.

With its rich history, commitment to conservation, and exciting plans, Riga Zoo continues to be a key educational and recreational destination in Latvia, cherished by both locals and tourists alike.
