Roman Catholic Parish Church (Parohia Romano-Catolică), Brasov

Saint Peter and Saint Paul's Roman Catholic Parish Church in Brasov stands as a significant historical and architectural monument on Muresenilor Street. This site, initially hosting a Dominican monastery approved in 1323 by the Dominican order in Barcelona, has evolved through centuries of religious and cultural shifts.

Constructed in the latter half of the 18th century, the current church replaces a 14th-century Gothic structure. Unlike its predecessor, which faced east, the modern edifice faces west, aligning with Baroque architectural principles. The church's inception came after various transformations, including its use by the Hungarian Lutheran community, post the 16th-century Protestant Reformation, and later by Jesuits in the early 18th century.

The construction of the present church began in 1776 under architect Karl Joseph Lamasch and was completed in 1787, with its consecration by Bishop Ignatiu Batthyany in 1782. This Baroque marvel features a facade adorned with a tribune and arched balustrade parapet, rich stucco decorations, and medallions depicting biblical scenes added during early 20th-century renovations.

Inside, the church hosts historical altars and confessionals within its side chapels. A notable feature is the pulpit, crafted by Janos Kupcsay, and a unique baroque painting of Mary Protectress from Passau. The chancel retains its Gothic roots, showcased by a five-sided octagon closure and cylindrical vault supported by Corinthian columns adorned with wooden saint statues.

Stained glass windows from Ede Kratzmann’s Budapest workshop and the sacristy and oratory rooms accessible via triumphal arch-connected stairs enrich the church’s interior, making it a repository of both faith and artistry in Brasov.
