Rotterdamse Schouwburg, Rotterdam
Since 2017, the Rotterdamse Schouwburg has been an integral part of Theater Rotterdam, a result of the merger involving RO Theater, Production House Rotterdam, and Wunderbaum. Renowned for its exceptional standards, Theater Rotterdam proudly showcases an array of both Dutch and international theatrical performances, avant-garde dance exhibitions, premier local theater troupes, vibrant festivals, and enchanting children's theater presentations.
The Schouwburg itself has graced Schouwburgplein since 1988, though it's worth noting that Rotterdam has a history of theaters predating it. Back in 1887, the grand Groote Schouwburg, boasting 1250 seats, was inaugurated. Tragically, the theater succumbed to the devastation of the Rotterdam bombing on May 14, 1940. An interim structure temporarily took its place until the emergence of the new Rotterdamse Schouwburg. However, even this successor would eventually yield to the current edifice due to its inability to align with contemporary theatrical requirements.
As one of Theater Rotterdam's two main venues, the Rotterdamse Schouwburg accommodates two auditoriums, seating 879 and 160 individuals respectively. With an eclectic and versatile program, Theater Rotterdam aims primarily to stimulate thought and reflection among its audience. Seeking unity, the organization facilitates dialogues both among themselves and with their spectators, with the ultimate goal of fostering connection. Within this context, Theater Rotterdam crafts its productions as well.
