Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds (must see)
The Royal Armouries Museum is a national museum that is part of the Royal Armouries family of museums. It exhibits the National Collection of Arms and Armour. The museum opened in 1996 with a collection that was previously on display at the Tower of London.
The museum was built by Royal Armouries International along the Leeds waterfront. It was designed by Derek Walker and Buro Happold. The opening, which took place in March 1996, was attended by Queen Elizabeth II.
The main building houses more than 5,000 in permanent displays. Many of these are weapons though the Hall of Steel offers many other types of objects. Among these are historical trophies that date from the 17th century. The Peace Gallery, located within the War Gallery, imagines a future that doesn't include the need for weapons.
The Jousting Arena hosts two jousting contests per year. The largest of these contests takes place from Good Friday to Easter Monday. The winner receives the Queen's Golden Jubilee Trophy.
The Royal Armouries Museum does not charge admission.

The old Brythonic word "Ladenses" meant "folks of the rapid river." The river was the River Aire that flows through the City of Leeds today. In the 5th century the once forested area of Leeds was part of the Brythonic kingdom of Elmet. The Venerable Bede called it "Loidis." In Welsh it was "lloed", "a place." At any rate, "Leeds."
