Rua de Cedofeita (Cedofeita Street), Porto
Cedofeita Street (Rua de Cedofeita) is a charming and historically rich street in the parishes of Vitória and Cedofeita in Porto. Its name traces back to the Church of São Martinho de Cedofeita, believed to have been founded in the 6th century during the time of Sueb rule. This church emphasizes the historical depth of the area, though the street itself did not come into being until much later, in 1762. It was part of an ambitious urban renewal plan initiated by João de Almada e Melo, aiming to better connect Porto’s riverside to its upper city through a network of carefully designed streets.
Cedofeita Street quickly grew into one of Porto’s main thoroughfares, becoming fully established by the early 19th century. Many of the buildings lining the street were constructed between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, featuring narrow, elongated facades with characteristic balconies, pilasters, granite accents, and traditional tiles, which were added in the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of these buildings are now considered properties of public interest by IGESPAR, preserving their architectural and historical significance.
Today, Cedofeita Street is a quieter, more laid-back alternative to Porto’s bustling Santa Catarina Street, offering a mix of traditional local commerce and well-known European brands. It is a popular destination for both leisurely strolls and shopping, with plenty of cafes to stop in for a snack. One notable spot along the street is Catraio, a well-loved craft beer bar located at number 256, adding to the street’s eclectic charm.
