Rugenbraeu Brewery, Interlaken
Rugenbräu Brewery is a family-owned beer brewery located in Matten, near Interlaken, in the picturesque Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. With roots tracing back to 1866, the brewery has a rich history of brewing and distilling traditions that have been passed down through generations.
The brewery was founded by Christian Indermühle at Gasthof Hotel Interlaken. After his death, his sons expanded it and built the Felsenkeller storage in 1875. In 1880, it became a public company. Bavarian brewer Joseph Hofweber took over in 1892, moved production to Grosser Rugen, and renamed it J. Hofweber & Cie. After several mergers, it became Rugenbräu AG in 1968. Though the Reichenbach Castle brewery closed in 1971, it was repurposed as a depot for the Bern area in 1988, maintaining a broader presence.
Today, Rugenbraeu Brewery continues to be family-owned and operates as a versatile beverage producer. The brewery's product range includes traditional offerings like light lagers, dark beers, and premium corn beers, as well as non-alcoholic options. In addition to beer, Rugenbräu has diversified into spirits, launching several whiskey bottlings and the distinctive Fleur de Bière d'Interlaken, a schnapps distilled from strong beer. Their offerings also include wines, mixed drinks like the Mountain Twister, and a variety of soft drinks.
With a production volume of nearly 4 million liters of beer annually and a total annual beverage output of 8 million liters (including beer, mineral water, wine, and spirits), Rugenbräu remains a prominent figure in the Swiss beverage industry, blending tradition with innovation.
