Saint Anthony Catholic Church, Fort Lauderdale
Saint Anthony Catholic Church, founded in the 1920s in Fort Lauderdale, has been a pillar of faith and community in South Florida. Originally situated at 3rd Avenue and Las Olas Boulevard, it later relocated downtown to accommodate the growing Catholic community. Starting with 65 families, the congregation has thrived over the years.
Dedicated in December of 1922 and under the initial guidance of Father G.J. Plunkett, Saint Anthony Catholic Church has the distinction of being Broward County's first Catholic Church. Its original structure, a formidable gray stone building hauled from quarries in northern Florida, provided a solid foundation for what would become a cornerstone of spiritual life and community service in the region.
For over four generations, Saint Anthony Catholic Church, fondly called the "Pioneer Parish," has been central to South Florida's religious and social fabric. It serves as a hub for worship, education through Saint Anthony Catholic School, and support for the community. The school, housed in a historic colonial-style building from 1926, adds to the parish's rich heritage.
Saint Anthony Parish serves as a vibrant community hub, welcoming people of all faiths to connect and participate in diverse activities. Besides worship, the church fosters spiritual growth by inviting individuals to embrace God in their lives. Initially offering two Sunday masses in the Season and one in summer, it has expanded over time to better serve its evolving congregation.
