Saint Elias Eastern Orthodox Church, Austin

Saint Elias Eastern Orthodox Church, Austin

Saint Elias Eastern Orthodox Church in Austin was established by immigrants from Lebanon and Syria at the close of the 19th century. The church's roots are deeply embedded in the history and traditions of the Middle Eastern community in Austin.

The church, completed in 1934, was designed by Lebanese architect John Kassouf, who drew inspiration from the architectural style of churches in the Holy Land. This design choice not only reflects the heritage of its founding members but also serves as a symbolic bridge connecting the congregation to their ancestral lands.

The church, however, is far from being exclusive to those of Lebanese and Syrian descent. It has grown to become a spiritual home for Orthodox Christians from various regions such as Greece, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Serbia, Bulgaria, Eritrea, and Romania. This diverse mix of nationalities enriches the church community, bringing together a wide array of traditions and experiences under the umbrella of the Orthodox faith.

Moreover, Saint Elias isn't just a hub for those born into the Orthodox Church. Many of its members have journeyed to Orthodoxy from other Christian denominations, and some from non-Christian backgrounds, making it a truly inclusive community that welcomes all who seek spiritual growth within the Orthodox tradition.

An integral part of Austin's cultural scene, the church hosts the Saint Elias Mediterranean Festival, the longest-running food event in the city. This annual festival is a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of the church's congregation and serves as a platform for cultural exchange and community engagement.
