Saint John the Baptist Church, Bristol

Saint John the Baptist Church, commonly known as Saint John on the Wall, is a historic church situated in Bristol. It is under the care of The Churches Conservation Trust, a heritage charity dedicated to preserving and maintaining significant religious buildings. The church's upper portion and its medieval vaulted crypt can be found at the lower end of Broad Street, integrated into the ancient medieval walls of the city.

Originally constructed in the 14th century, the church underwent extensive modifications during the 19th century. Its tower and steeple rise above Saint John's Gate, which is the sole surviving city gateway of Bristol. Due to its location, the church is exceptionally narrow, fitting snugly into and running alongside the city walls. This unique characteristic has led to its alternative name, Saint John's on the Wall. Underneath the church lies a vaulted crypt that was dedicated to the Holy Cross.

Inside the church, several monuments can be found, including those dedicated to Walter Frampton, a prominent figure who served as the Mayor of Bristol three times and generously supported the church. Additionally, a brass memorializes Thomas Rowley, who passed away around 1478.

Adjacent to the gate's southern side, statues of the legendary founders of Bristol, Brennus, and Belinus, face up Broad Street. These statues potentially predate the construction of the gate itself. The interiors of the two arches flanking the main gateway are now adorned with commissioned graffiti murals, adding a contemporary touch to the historical setting.
