Saint Michael Church, Passau

Saint Michael Church, Passau

Saint Michael Church in Passau, a Baroque architectural marvel with historical importance, dates back to the 17th century. The Jesuits, brought to Passau in 1611, built a college and a church, which was destroyed in the city fire of 1662. From 1665 to 1678, they constructed Saint Michael's Church with the support of Prince-bishop of Passau.

However, the Jesuits' influence decreased after Pope Clement XIV suppressed them in 1773, and the bishopric was secularized in 1803. The church, with its Italian-style exteriors and exquisite interior, houses magnificent artwork, including altars, a painting of the fallen angel, and angel statues. The adjoining buildings now serve as the University of Passau's faculty of Catholic theology and the Passau State Library, known for its extensive collection of books and manuscripts. Saint Michael's Church is a reflection of Passau's rich religious and cultural heritage.
