Saint Shenouda Coptic Orthodox Church, Hurghada

The Saint Shenouda Coptic Orthodox Church is a significant religious institution within the Coptic Orthodox community. Occupying a space of 1500 square meters, the church may appear unassuming from the outside, yet its interior reveals a remarkable display of intricate architecture. The stained-glass windows, painted ceilings, and religious murals and paintings above the altar showcase the church's aesthetic richness.

Egyptian Christians, known as Copts, lend their name to the church, reflecting their religious identity. Historical records suggest that the temple was constructed in the mid-1820s by the British and subsequently handed over to the Coptic community. Despite its simple exterior, the interior ambiance fosters a sense of peace and tranquility reminiscent of Catholic cathedrals. Rows of benches for parishioners line the interior, adorned with painted icons on the walls and bright stained-glass windows depicting scenes from religious narratives.

The church complex includes a secondary worship space beneath the main cathedral, catering to overflow during special holy days. Surrounding the main building is a courtyard, and visitors can also find a church shop within the premises.

As a gesture of respect, visitors are advised to check their attire before entering the premises. Women are encouraged to cover their heads with a scarf and dress modestly, avoiding bare shoulders and knees.
