Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Miami

The Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral serves the vibrant Greek Community that resides in Miami. It is well known for the church festival held annually in February.

Emigrants from Greece came to Miami to work on the railroads. They preferred the city to other parts of the US because the weather was warm and comfortable like their native land. The Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral was built between 1948 and 1950. The Greek Orthodox Congregation met in several places before its construction for worship including the Trinity Episcopal Church and in the houses of prominent parishioners. The architectural style of the cathedral is Byzantine and it was designed by the Greek architect, Christoforos P. Kantianis. The church not only served as a house of worship but also as a place where the religion, language and customs of the Greek congregation is taught to future generations.

The festival of the Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral is an annual celebration of Greek culture. Visitors from all communities are welcome to sample tradition Greek food and wine and to take part in the dancing and raffles. It is a family event and stalls sell traditional Greek jewelry, arts and crafts. There are also many shows and rides that young visitors can enjoy.
