Sambadrome, Rio de Janeiro
The Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí is a specially constructed parade venue designed for the Rio Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. This location is also known as Passarela Professor Darcy Ribeiro or simply the Sambadrome. It is situated in the downtown district of Cidade Nova in Rio de Janeiro and serves as the stage where samba schools compete annually during the Rio Carnival. The architectural design of the Sambadrome was conceived by the renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907–2012), marking his initial significant project following the conclusion of the Brazilian dictatorship from 1964 to 1985.
The Sambódromo comprises a 700-meter (2,300-foot) section of Marquês de Sapucaí street, which has been permanently transformed into a parade ground with spectator bleachers (grandstands) constructed on either side. It has a seating capacity of 90,000 individuals. The parade avenue is repainted in gray each year prior to the Carnival. The complex includes a space positioned at the conclusion of the parade route, known as Praça da Apoteose (Apotheosis Square), near the Morro da Mineira. Here, the bleachers are set back from the parade area, creating a square where participants gather as they conclude their parade.
The Sambadrome has become a significant point of interest in Rio de Janeiro. When the Carnival season is not in full swing, it is sometimes transformed into a major concert venue in the city, hosting renowned artists such as Black Eyed Peas, Elton John, Britney Spears, Nirvana, and many more. Additionally, during the Olympic Games, the Sambadrome will be the venue for athletics, including the marathon, as well as archery. Its seating capacity is 18,000 for athletics (marathon) and 3,800 for archery events.
