San Gervasio Mayan Archaeological Site, San Miguel de Cozumel (must see)

San Gervasio, an archaeological marvel nestled in the northern region of Cozumel, stands as a testament to the rich heritage of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. This ancient site, originally known as Tantun Cuzamil in Mayan, meaning "Flat Rock in the place of the Swallows," unfolds the intriguing narrative of its historical significance.

The ruins of San Gervasio served as a sacred center dedicated to the worship of the revered goddess Ix Chel. Ix Chel, an aged deity associated with childbirth, fertility, medicine, and weaving, drew pilgrims from the Mayan society. Pre-Columbian Maya women undertook journeys to San Gervasio, making offerings and seeking blessings at least once in their lives.

Despite the absence of roofs and upper portions in many structures today, meticulous plans and reconstructions by archaeologists from Harvard and the University of Arizona provide insight into the original grandeur of San Gervasio. These detailed renderings, available in the guidebook offered by the Cozumel Parks and Museum Foundation, showcase the architectural brilliance of this pre-Columbian site.

San Gervasio is divided into four districts spread across several square kilometers. District 1, primarily open to the public, encompasses the Central Plaza Group. Visitors can explore the well-preserved structures within or in proximity to the District 1 Central Plaza Group, offering a glimpse into the ancient Maya's architectural and religious practices.

The local iguana population, accustomed to human presence, adds a unique dimension to the visitor experience. While exploring the ruins, visitors may encounter other species such as lizards, peccaries, and coatis, providing a harmonious blend of history and natural beauty.
