San Jose Flea Market, San Jose
Located in the Berryessa district of San Jose, the San Jose Flea Market is not just a marketplace—it’s practically a small city. Founded in March 1960 by George Bumb Sr., the idea was born from his work in the solid waste and landfill business. After observing how many usable items were discarded daily, and inspired by visits to Los Angeles swap meets and Paris’ Thieves Market, Bumb bought 120 acres of a former meat-processing plant and turned it into a local institution.
What started with just 20 vendors and around 100 daily customers has grown into a bustling hub of commerce. Today, the Flea Market boasts eight miles (13 kilometers) of aisles and can accommodate over 2,000 vendors. At its peak in the late 1980s, it reported 2,400 vendors and over 4 million visitors annually. For many in Silicon Valley, it’s not only a shopping destination but a vital source of income.
The goods on offer range from the every day to the eclectic—jewelry, tools, furniture, shoes, toys, cosmetics, cookware, and even cars and car stereo equipment. A major highlight is the Farmers Market, a quarter-mile stretch lined with fresh fruits and vegetables straight from California growers.
Food and fun are part of the experience. The Flea Market includes multiple restaurants operated by The Flea Market, Inc., serving American and Mexican cuisine, alongside roving food carts offering beer, soda, and churros. Entertainment is a weekend staple, with two stages, one dedicated to live Mariachi music. For families, attractions like a vintage carousel, arcade, carnival rides, and three playgrounds add to the festive atmosphere.
