Sandton City Office Tower, Johannesburg

Sandton City Office Tower, Johannesburg

Connected to Nelson Mandela Square by a pedestrian mall bridge, the Sandton City Office Tower stands tall at 22 stories, offering prime business space in Johannesburg, close to the city's financial district. Within the same building, you'll find the upscale Sandton City Shopping Centre. This tower serves as a central hub for South African commerce, housing the country's "Top 4" banks. The Sandton district offers a plethora of additional businesses, dining options, shopping venues, and hotels, all conveniently located within a 1-2 kilometers radius.

Situated atop Sandton City, one of Africa's largest shopping centers, the Sandton City Office Tower was the inaugural high-rise building in Sandton and remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the area. The construction of Sandton City and its accompanying office tower in the 1970s marked a pivotal moment in the transformation of the Sandton area. It heralded a rapid shift towards commercialization and industrialization, reflecting the broader 'White Flight' movement of businesses out of Johannesburg's city center during the 1980s. Consequently, Sandton established itself as Johannesburg's secondary Central Business District.

This 22-story modernist-style Brutalist concrete structure, representative of the architectural trends in South Africa during the early 1970s, soars 110 meters above ground level. Its distinctive feature is a glass roof that illuminates the tower at night. In 2014, this iconic office tower underwent a revitalization project, receiving a contemporary facade cladding that was applied over the original concrete structure, along with an extended spire atop the tower.
