Santa Maria Antica Church, Verona

Santa Maria Antica Church, Verona

The Santa Maria Antica Church is a Roman Catholic cathedral that also served as the private place of worship for the Scala family, who had their family burial grounds on the property. This building showcases Romanesque architectural design and has a rich history. It was initially constructed in the seventh century and underwent significant reconstruction in 1185 following the earthquake of 1117. In 1630, the church's interior was renovated to incorporate Baroque elements, but it was later restored to its original design during the nineteenth century.

The building is characterized by its small windows, an exterior made of tuff and brick, and a modest bell tower featuring lancet windows. The side entrance prominently displays the arch of Cangrande I della Scala, a renowned warrior and ruler. Inside, the place of worship boasts three naves, along with columns and graceful curved arches. Many of the frescoes adorning the church date back to the fourteenth century.

Santa Maria Antica Church is a popular destination for tourists, drawing thousands of visitors annually who come to admire the stunning Arche Scaligere, a collection of five family tombs situated in the church courtyard. These funerary monuments are celebrated as prime examples of Gothic architecture in Italy. They house the remains of significant members of the Scala family, including Cangrande I, Mastino II, Cansignorio, Alberto II, and Giovanni.
