Santa Maria la Blanca Church, Seville

Santa Maria la Blanca Church, Seville

The Santa María la Blanca Church, located in Seville's historic Casco Antiguo district, dates back to the 17th century. It serves as the main site for the Rosary Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Snows. This site originally housed a structure from the Visigothic period in Hispania, evidenced by the Visigothic columns at the temple's southern entrance on Archeros Street.

Following Seville's reconquest in 1248, King Ferdinand III handed over most city mosques to the Seville Archdiocese, but three in the Jewish quarter became synagogues, including this site. By 1391, it was converted into a Christian church, incorporating Gothic-Mudejar architectural elements. Only the façade and initial section of the belfry from this era remain today.

Significant enhancements occurred in the 17th century, including the construction of the baptismal chapel in 1642 and the main chapel in 1660. Between 1642 and 1646, Diego Gómez added a chapel over a neighboring tavern. In 1662, Justino de Neve and Juan González redesigned the church vaults, introducing a central vault and a dome on pendentives, replacing old columns with jasper ones from Antequera, crafted by Gabriel de Mena. The Roldán family contributed to the plasterwork of these features.

The church's interior decoration was undertaken in 1657 by the Borja brothers. The church has a rectangular layout, extending into the chancel with two additional rectangular bodies. It contains three aisles divided by ten Tuscan red marble columns, supporting semicircular arches and vaults. Above the central nave's last two sections, near the presbytery, lies a dome on pendentives, flanked by oculi windows, while the presbytery area features a barrel vault with lunettes.
