Schleswig-Holsteinischer Landtag (Schleswig-Holstein State Parliament), Kiel

The Schleswig-Holstein State Parliament is the state parliament of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. It plays the role of the legislative body (legislature) in the political system of Schleswig-Holstein. Its parliamentary functions and its composition are fundamentally regulated by Article 16 of the state constitution. The State Parliament is elected for five years. It appoints the Minister President (currently Daniel Günther) of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Similar to other state parliaments, its main responsibilities lie in the areas of education, culture, spatial planning and domestic policy. The State House in Kiel has been the seat of the State Parliament since 3 May 1950. It was built in 1888 as the naval academy of the Imperial Navy. It has been remodeled several times, most recently in April 2003 a new plenary hall was completed based on a design by the Hanoverian team of architects Anja Brüning and Wolfgang-Michael Pax. In the years from 1946 to 1950, the state parliament met in Kiel (city theater, dairy research institute, educational academy), in the Lübeck town hall, in Flensburg and Eckernförde. A session was interrupted in Kiel and continued in Surendorf (municipality of Schwedeneck). Changing art exhibitions take place in the rooms of the country house and can be viewed free of charge. Among other things, the ' Werner ' motorcycle was exhibited in 2022.

There is probably no other state parliament that has changed its meeting location more often. In the years 1946-50 it met in four different locations: Kiel, Lübeck, Flensburg and Eckernförde. It was not until May 3, 1950 that the permanent seat was in the State House in Kiel. The building was built in 1888 as the naval academy of the Imperial Navy. Several renovations (most recently the new plenary hall completed in 2003) ensured that the parliament has had good working conditions over time. The Schleswig-Holstein constitution, which was drawn up by the state parliament and passed in 1949, was called the “state statute.” It was only with reunification and a reform in 1990 that it was renamed the “state constitution.” ***PH***
