Schuyler Mansion, Albany (must see)

Schuyler Mansion was the grand residence of Philip J. Schuyler, a prominent figure in American history who served as a Revolutionary War Major General, U.S. Senator, and successful businessman. Schuyler, along with his wife Catharine Van Rensselaer, who both hailed from influential Dutch families, raised their eight children in this stately home. The mansion, built in the Georgian style to reflect Schuyler's English tastes, is perched on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River. Originally part of an 80-acre estate, the property included an orchard, formal gardens, and a working farm, creating a picturesque and functional landscape.

During the Schuyler family's residence from 1763 to 1804, the mansion was a hub of activity and influence. It hosted military strategizing sessions, political meetings, and elegant social events, while also serving as a bustling family home. Notably, the mansion was also the residence of more than fifty enslaved laborers, servants, and artisans, whose labor was integral to the functioning of the estate.

Today, Schuyler Mansion serves as a historical site where visitors can delve into the rich 18th-century history of the estate and its inhabitants. From mid-May through October, guided tours of the mansion are available, offering insights into the lives of the Schuyler family and the many people who lived and worked there. The Visitor Center features an orientation exhibition that provides context and background on the mansion and its historical significance.

In addition to the regular tours, the mansion hosts temporary exhibitions and public programs throughout the year, ensuring that there is always something new to learn and experience.
