Scitech, Perth
Scitech is a non-profit organization that operates the Scitech Discovery Centre, an interactive science museum located in West Perth, along with outreach programs, professional learning initiatives, and digital content. The main goal of the organization is to encourage the involvement of all Western Australians in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
In the 1980s, prominent figures in Western Australia—physicist Emeritus Professor John de Laeter, mining leader Sir Laurence Brodie-Hall, and politician and computing pioneer the Honorable Mal Bryce—asked: "How do we inspire people when our future depends on science and technology?" The response was Scitech, which opened on August 13, 1988, aiming to spark curiosity among Western Australians. The original team built about 150 exhibits over nine months for the Discovery Centre's opening.
The Scitech Discovery Centre showcases interactive exhibits created and assembled in their workshop, aimed at engaging visitors with various aspects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Additionally, the Centre hosts live science demonstrations, puppet shows, and planetarium presentations delivered by Scitech Science Communicators. There's also a Scitech Lab utilized for conducting workshops during school excursions and holiday programs.
Special exhibitions are introduced annually, each following a specific theme, storyline, or concept. These exhibitions are developed in-house by Scitech's design, graphics, and workshop teams. Furthermore, they are designed to be transportable and have been showcased at science centers nationwide across Australia and internationally, including in North America, Saudi Arabia, and China.
