Scotiabank Centre, Halifax
The Scotiabank Centre, formerly known as the Halifax Metro Centre, is the largest multi-purpose facility in Atlantic Canada. Situated in downtown Halifax at the foot of Citadel Hill, it serves as the city’s prime venue for major sporting events, concerts, and entertainment spectacles. The arena’s main entrances are located along Brunswick Street, while the box office sits on Carmichael Street.
Opened on February 17, 1978, the arena was ingeniously constructed into the ground to accommodate the area’s steep elevation, allowing spectators inside to see passing cars at street level. Initially featuring a striking ring of bright orange seats, the venue underwent multiple renovations over the years to modernize its facilities.
The Scotiabank Centre has hosted numerous high-profile events, earning a reputation for rapid ticket sellouts. Some of its standout moments include Ozzy Osbourne’s concert in 2007, which sold out in just nine minutes; Elton John’s two back-to-back concerts in 2008, selling 25,000 tickets in 40 minutes; and the Halifax Mooseheads’ 2013 QMJHL Presidents Cup final, selling out in 11 minutes.
The arena boasts a seating capacity of 10,595 for ice hockey, with 43 SkyBoxes and 11 Executive Suites. However, the SkyBoxes have partially obstructed some upper bowl views, a challenge mitigated by video projection equipment. The facility is also connected to the Downtown Halifax Link, ensuring easy indoor access to nearby buildings.
Owned by the municipality of Halifax and operated by Events East, the Scotiabank Centre remains a cornerstone of the city’s cultural and sporting scene. With its rich history, modern enhancements, and ability to draw in top-tier entertainment, it continues to be Halifax’s go-to venue for unforgettable live experiences.

Halifax Introduction Walking Tour
Halifax is located on the ancestral lands of the Mi'kmaq who lived in the area long before Europeans arrived. Mi'kmaq called the area "Great Harbor". The city itself was established by the British in 1749 in violation of treaties with the Mi'kmaq. The establishment of the city led to Father le Loutre's War, otherwise known as the Anglo-Micmac War.
