Scots International Church, Rotterdam

Scots International Church, Rotterdam

The Scots International Church resides in Rotterdam. This Protestant church conducts its services in English and follows the Presbyterian tradition. It holds affiliation with the Church of Scotland and is a part of the Church's Presbytery of Europe. Originally constructed to cater to the community of Scottish merchants, sailors, and soldiers dwelling in Rotterdam, the church holds historical significance.

The Scottish Church in Rotterdam stands out as a captivating landmark on the European map. Its establishment dates back to September 13, 1643, with Alexander Petrie as its inaugural minister. Officially placed under the care of the Dutch Classis, it was granted the same privileges as the Dutch Church. This encompassed the freedom to incorporate Scottish customs and practices into their worship.

During its history, the church served as the primary place of worship for the Scottish Brigade. Formed in 1572, this brigade consisted of three regiments, raised by the Earl of Leicester for service in the Netherlands. Though the Earl later returned to England, the regiments remained and played pivotal roles in the States General's conflicts with Spain and France for over two centuries. Sourced exclusively from Scotland, these regiments became the foundational units of William the Third's forces, marking a significant milestone in European military history.

In 1722, an expansion of the church included the addition of a dedicated almshouse, which provided support to the widows and orphans of fallen Scottish soldiers. Sadly, the church that stood since the 17th century fell victim to the bombings during the Rotterdam Blitz in 1940. In its place, the present-day building on Schiedamsevest, designed by M. C. A. Meischke, was erected in 1952.
