Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai

Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai (must see)

The Shanghai Grand Theatre serves as the primary location for significant music performances and art exhibitions, both Chinese and international, within the city. Its contemporary design features a distinctive curved roof that, when illuminated at night, resembles a dazzling crystal palace.

This theatre comprises 10 floors and sits at the northern edge of People's Square. It was conceived by the French architect Jean-Marie Charpentier and officially opened its doors in 1998. Inside, you'll find three spacious auditoriums; the largest one hosts ballets, concerts, and operas, including traditional Chinese opera performances by the China National Peking Opera Company. The smaller auditoriums cater to chamber music concerts, theater productions, and fashion shows. The lobby boasts an expansive 2000-square-meter area adorned with Greece Crystal White marble flooring. Notably, the theatre houses one of the world's most extensive automated stages, equipped with cutting-edge lighting and stereo technology.

Over the years, the Grand Theatre has played host to renowned opera singers, ballet companies, and European Symphony orchestras. It also serves as the venue for numerous art festivals and events, such as the China Shanghai International Art Festival and the SCO Members Art Festival. Additionally, the annual Shanghai International Film Festival takes place here, making the theatre a prominent hub for international cultural exhibitions.
