Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA), Shanghai (must see)
Situated near People's Park in Shanghai, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) serves as a venue for temporary exhibitions featuring modern art created by both Chinese and international artists. Established in 2005 by the Samuel Kung Foundation, MoCA Shanghai holds the distinction of being the first non-profit, independent institution dedicated to contemporary art in Shanghai.
The striking glass structure that houses the exhibitions is a reimagining of the former People's Park Greenhouse, designed by Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects. The museum spans the ground floor and the first level, offering a combined exhibition space of 1,800 square meters (approximately 19,400 square feet), with the two levels connected by an elegant steel ramp. On the 3rd floor, visitors can enjoy MoCA on the Park, a fully-fledged restaurant complete with a rooftop patio and bar.
The museum has a keen focus on promoting both Chinese and international contemporary art through a diverse range of exhibitions. These exhibitions showcase the work of established and emerging contemporary Chinese artists, along with retrospectives dedicated to prominent figures in the world of fashion and creativity. Notably, MoCA recently joined forces with the Korea Foundation to present 'Nostalgia: East Asia Contemporary Art Exhibition,' featuring artworks from China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea.
The museum also hosts international exhibitions showcasing contemporary art from countries such as Indonesia, Hungary, Italy, and India. In collaboration with Marimekko, MoCA organized an exhibition on Finnish Design. Additionally, the museum hosts a biennial event called 'MoCA Envisage,' which places a spotlight on Chinese contemporary art, exploring its current direction and themes.
Tip:
Admission fee depends on the specific exhibition, and quality seems variable so best check online before going.
