Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Shanghai
The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, located in the Pudong district near Century Park, is a prominent institution dedicated to the popularization of science. With a core theme emphasizing the harmonious integration of "Nature, Mankind, and Technology," the museum seeks to inspire and educate the public about scientific advancements and their impacts on the world. The museum's architecture and original exhibits, designed by Creative Star Digital, reflect this mission through innovative and interactive displays.
The museum officially opened its doors to the public on December 18, 2001, following the completion of its first phase of construction. Initially, it featured five main exhibition halls—dedicated to "Heaven and Earth," "Life," "Wisdom," "Creativity," and "the Future"—each designed to explore the interconnectedness of natural phenomena, human innovation, and future possibilities.
The second phase of the museum was unveiled in May 2005, further expanding its offerings and enhancing its role as a center for science education. In anticipation of the Shanghai World Expo in 2010, the children's area and the Light of Wisdom exhibition underwent significant renovations from January to May 2010, reaffirming the museum's commitment to providing a dynamic and educational environment for visitors of all ages.
The museum has also served as a venue for significant events, including the APEC Leaders' Meeting on October 20 and 21, 2001, and a notable town hall meeting hosted by US President Barack Obama with Shanghainese students on November 16, 2009, during his state visit. These events underscore the museum's role not only as an educational institution but also as a platform for international dialogue and exchange.
