Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, Brisbane

Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, Brisbane

The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, opened on May 24, 1978, is situated in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mount Coot-tha. It's named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, a former governor of New South Wales and a renowned Scottish astronomer who set up a notable observatory in Parramatta.

This Planetarium features a large hemispherical theatre, the Cosmic Skydome, measuring 12.5 meters in diameter and seating up to 130 people. Its Foyer and Gallery showcase various space and astronomy exhibits, including a replica of Neil Armstrong's spacesuit from the 1969 Apollo 11 Moon landing, a model of the Saturn V rocket, meteorites, and models of spacecraft and astronomical tools. In 2018, the Planetarium added "Skylore: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Astronomy," a significant exhibit, to its Gallery. The Planetarium also has a mini-theatre with updates from the Space Telescope Science Institute and an observatory with two telescopes.

The Planetarium hosts over 1,300 shows annually for the public and schools, and offers observatory sessions. In the 2017/2018 financial year, it attracted over 155,000 visitors, with about 80,000 attending Cosmic Skydome sessions.

A significant update in June 2019 included a new digital projection system and the addition of the Skylore Story, featuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders' star knowledge. This exhibit was developed by Dr. Duane Hamacher, an astronomer and academic.

Outside, there is a statue of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, known as the Father of Cosmonautics, and a large sundial in the Sundial Courtyard.
