South Carolina Governor's Mansion, Columbia
The South Carolina Governor's Mansion, also known as the South Carolina Executive Mansion, is a stately historic residence located in the Arsenal Hill neighborhood of Columbia. Serving as the official home of the governor of South Carolina, it reflects the elegance of Federal-style architecture with influences from British Colonial plantation homes. Its white stucco exterior, flat roof, and central pavilion lend the mansion a classic yet commanding presence.
Originally constructed to house faculty for the Arsenal Academy—part of the South Carolina Military Academy alongside the Citadel in Charleston—the building is the sole survivor of General Sherman’s burning of Columbia in February 1865. It was designated as the governor’s residence in 1868 and has since housed more than thirty governors and their families. Governor Henry McMaster and his family currently reside there.
Beyond being a private residence, the mansion plays an important public and ceremonial role. Its 15 rooms (excluding service areas) include spaces that host visiting dignitaries and guests of the state. The public rooms are filled with historical artifacts, including silverware, china, furniture, paintings, and documents that showcase South Carolina’s rich cultural legacy.
The grounds cover nine acres and include two additional historic homes: the Lace House and the Caldwell-Boylston House. Surrounded by magnolia plants, elms, oaks, and other native greenery, the mansion is accessed via a circular driveway centered on a fountain, adding to its grandeur. Located in Columbia Historic District I and listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places since 1970, the mansion stands as both a functioning residence and a symbol of South Carolina’s enduring heritage.
