Southampton Common Park, Southampton

Southampton Common Park, Southampton

Southampton Common, located just north of Southampton’s city center, is a vast 365-acre (148-hectare) green space, blending woodland, parkland, and wetlands. Surrounded by the districts of Shirley, Bassett, Highfield, and Portswood, it serves as a vital habitat for diverse wildlife, including a significant population of the rare great crested newt. The Common, designated as a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest, is not only a haven for nature but also a hub for community events like the Flower Festival and Cancer Research UK's Race for Life.

Visitors can explore its many features, including nature trails, a children's play area, and two lakes—a model yachting lake and a fishing lake. Birdwatchers are drawn to Cemetery Lake, located near the historic cemetery at the western edge, which is home to rare flora and fauna. The Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre, situated on the southern end of the Common, offers educational exhibits about the area's natural history, replacing the former Southampton Zoo.

A notable landmark, the Cowherds Inn, sits near the children's play area and dates back to the 17th century. The Common is also crossed by the A33, known as "The Avenue," which has been lined with trees since the 18th century. Streams, including the Rollesbrook, weave through the area, contributing to its tranquil atmosphere.

Southampton Common has a rich cultural history as well. The Common People music festival was held here from 2015 to 2018, and it is even mentioned in the song "Bloodflood" by Alt-J. For fitness enthusiasts, a weekly Parkrun takes place on Saturday mornings, starting near the Hawthorns Centre, offering yet another way for the community to enjoy this beloved open space.
