Spitalbrauerei, Regensburg

Spitalbrauerei, Regensburg

Spitalbrauerei is a renowned brewery located in Regensburg. With an annual production of 15,000 hectoliters in 2008, it has established itself as a prominent player in the brewing industry. The brewery encompasses the popular brewery restaurant called "Spitalgarten" and the "Spitalkeller," a wine cellar with a spacious beer garden.

The roots of Spitalbrauerei date back to 1238 when the residents of the hospital were promised a nightcap of beer or wine. In the late 13th century, beer production began using barley and oats, but by the 14th century, the recipe evolved to include only barley, hops, and water. Around the year 1400, the brewery even ventured into experimenting with wheat beer production.

In 1852, the St. Katharinenspitalstiftung acquired a beer cellar in Steinweg. Subsequently, the brewery and inn were relocated, and the Strasser brewery in Stadtamhof, along with its associated summer beer cellar, became part of the establishment, now known as the "Spitalkeller" hospital restaurant. However, the brewery itself was not moved from its original location.

Spitalbrauerei offers a diverse range of beer varieties to cater to different tastes. Some of their notable offerings include the 1226 festival beer, Ur-Hell, bright beer, dark beer, wheat beer, wheat dark beer, light wheat beer, bright bock beer, wheat double bock beer, Campus Halbe, Campus cyclists, non-alcoholic light beer, and non-alcoholic wheat beer. These beers are typically packaged in NRW beer bottles with crown caps.

The quality of Spitalbrauerei's beers has garnered recognition within the industry. In 2011, their Spital Helles beer received the prestigious European Beer Star award, followed by another accolade in 2013 for their Spital Dunkel beer.

Meandering through the Old Town of Regensburg, it’s easy to forget that some 1800 years ago most of this area was occupied by a Roman fortress. Although the first settlement here dates from as early as the Stone Age, it is the Romans who put it firmly on the map.

Around 90 AD, they first built an expeditionary and then a permanent military camp called Castra Regina ("Fortress by the...  view more
