St. Albert Kirche (St. Albert's Church), Heidelberg

Amidst the wave of historicist church constructions at the turn of the century, Saint Albert's stands as a pioneering example of modern architectural expression in Heidelberg. Rising from the banks of the Neckar River in 1933, this structure has a unique aesthetic, fashioned from small rubble stones and characterized by clear cubic forms. Its slender lancet windows and a rose window above the portal pay homage to the Gothic architectural tradition while embracing a contemporary sensibility.

Step inside, and you'll encounter the centerpiece of the interior: a monumental altarpiece crafted by Rudolf Kaufhold in 1961. This masterwork portrays the enthroned Christ encircled by a celestial retinue of angels, prophets, and the symbolic representations of the Evangelists. Notably, Saint Albertus Magnus, the patron saint of the church, is depicted in multifaceted roles as a monk, bishop, and natural scientist, honoring his diverse contributions.

The church's musical soul finds expression in its magnificent organ, crafted between 1938 and 1947 by Willy Dold of Freiburg. With 32 registers across two manuals and a pedal, this instrument represents a synthesis of 19th-century German and French organ romanticism, adhering to the principles of the organ movement. Its open organ case seamlessly integrates into the gallery, framing the rose window with elegance.
