St. Andrew's Evangelical Church, York

St. Andrew's Evangelical Church, York

Saint Andrew's Church, located on Saint Andrewgate in the heart of York, holds a significant historical legacy as a Grade II* listed building. The church's existence was first recorded in the Domesday Book, with a definitive mention of a church at its current site dating back to 1194. Throughout the medieval period, Saint Andrew's was a modest structure, subordinate to Saint Martin, Coney Street, from 1331 to 1443. The oldest part of the existing building is the chancel, completed in 1392 by Hugh Grantham. The nave followed in the 15th century, showcasing the architectural developments of the time.

The church ceased religious functions in 1559, and in 1586 its parish merged with that of Saint Saviour on Saint Saviourgate. Over the ensuing centuries, the building served various purposes. In the early 1700s, it was reportedly used as a stable and a brothel. By around 1730, it had become part of Saint Peter's School, functioning as the infant section from 1823. Although the chancel fell into ruins, it was reconstructed as a cottage by 1850.

The transformation continued and by 1956, the building was re-established as a church. Since then, it has been utilized by an independent Christian Brethren congregation. Remarkably, most of the medieval structure, including Magnesian limestone walls with reused Roman gritstone blocks and brick infill, remains intact. Architectural features such as one original window in the chancel, two in the nave, and the preserved chancel arch, which remains blocked, highlight its historical importance. Additionally, the remnants of a wooden bell turret are incorporated within the roof structure, adding to its rich heritage.
