St. Clement's Church, Philadelphia

Saint Clement's Church, situated in Logan Square, Center City, Philadelphia, is a distinguished historic Anglo-Catholic parish within the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania. The church, a creation of the esteemed architect John Notman, was constructed in 1856, showcasing his architectural prowess. Originally, it featured an ambitious spire soaring over 200 feet (61 meters) high. However, due to concerns about its weight on the foundation, this spire was removed in 1869.

A remarkable engineering feat occurred in 1929 when the entire church building, including the parish house and rectory – collectively weighing 5,000 short tons (4,500 tonnes) – was lifted onto steel rollers and relocated 40 feet (12 meters) westward. This extraordinary move was undertaken to facilitate the widening of 20th Street.

The church's exterior is particularly striking, with its main façade dominated by a prominent bell tower and a commanding semi-circular apse. This apse is characterized by a blind arcade, featuring simple columns and Romanesque arches, contributing to the church's distinct architectural style.

Internally, the church is equally impressive. It boasts a large carved oak reredos and triptych, both installed in 1908, which majestically stand above the high altar, adding to the spiritual ambiance and artistic richness of the church's interior.

Further cementing its historical and cultural significance, Saint Clement's Church was proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 20, 1970, recognizing its architectural beauty and historical importance in the city of Philadelphia.
