St. Eugenia's Church, Stockholm
Saint Eugenia's Church, a Roman Catholic church located in the heart of Stockholm, is an important religious and historical landmark. Built in 1982, the church was designed by Danish architect Jørgen Kjaergaard and is situated near the former Royal Gardens, in the Norrmalm district. The church is dedicated to Saint Eugenia (Eugénie d’Alsace), an abbess of the Mont Sainte-Odile monastery in Alsace, France, who lived from 700 to 735.
Saint Eugenia Parish, established in 1837, is the oldest Catholic parish in Sweden since the Reformation, with about 9,000 members as of 2010. The Jesuits oversee its operations, offering services in Swedish, English, Polish, and Arabic. Its roots trace back to 1783 when King Gustav III allowed religious freedom for foreign Catholics, leading to a chapel in Södermalm's City Hall. In 1837, it moved to Norrmalm, becoming Sweden's first Catholic church since the Reformation, and in 1860, the Jesuits began managing the parish.
The present-day church is integrated into a historic palace and courtyard built in 1887. Due to its location behind the Neorenaissance façade of the former dwelling house, the church is not immediately recognizable from the outside, with only a small gilded cross above the main entrance hinting at its presence. The interior of the church is modestly designed, featuring red brick and several significant artifacts from the old church on Norra Smedjegatan. These include the water fonts, a Neobaroque porphyry baptismal font gifted by King Carl XIV Johan and Queen Désirée Clary in 1838, and a Carrara marble tabernacle donated by Archduke Maximilian d'Este in 1842.
One of the most notable features inside the church is the monumental wooden cross in the sanctuary, made from the roof beams of the predecessor church and bearing a 13th-century figure of Christ from Dalecarlia. The foundation stone, a marble block from the foundation of Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome, was a gift from Pope Paul VI. The church also houses a Saint Mary's Chapel, separated from the main liturgical space by an ornate grille, which remains open during the day for private prayer.
