St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Sacramento
Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Sacramento is a historic community that was established over a century ago through a collaboration between the Diocese and the Franciscan Friars. The original church was quickly constructed and dedicated on April 7, 1895. Due to the parish's rapid growth, a larger church was constructed on the same site, with its cornerstone laid on October 18, 1908, and dedication on October 23, 1910.
The parish complex has expanded to include a three-story school, now known as Saint Francis Elementary School; a convent that serves as the Parish Center; and a Friary for the Franciscan friars. The architectural design of the church is inspired by the Old Mission of Santa Barbara, blending Renaissance and Baroque styles. The interior is adorned with over 40 stained-glass windows and numerous murals depicting saints and Biblical scenes. A significant feature is the wooden staircase and railing leading to the organ loft, which were originally part of the 1906 remodeling of the State Capitol. The loft houses a 1915 Austin electro-pneumatic pipe organ. Additionally, the church bell, cast in 1859 and originally installed in Saint Rose Church, now resides in the belfry of Saint Francis of Assisi Church and tolls daily.
The church celebrated its Centennial Anniversary on September 30, 1995, under the banner "100 Years of Blessings." A commemorative book titled A Century of Grace: A People of God in a House of God, which documents the church's rich history and artistic details through photographs, is available at the Parish Center. This vibrant community continues to thrive, anchored by its rich history and dedicated congregation.
