St. Joseph Church, Beirut

St. Joseph Church, Beirut

Saint Joseph Church, located on Gouraud Street in Beirut, stands as a historical monument with roots extending back to 1875. Originally built as a Franciscan convent, the church showcases traditional Lebanese architecture, embodying the region's rich cultural and architectural heritage. The church houses the revered Crucifix of S. Damiano Assisi, adding a significant spiritual and artistic value to its interior.

Nearly a year after a devastating blast that impacted Beirut, Saint Joseph Church became a focal point of recovery and celebration, thanks to the restoration efforts spearheaded by the Catholic charity, Aid to the Church in Need. This restoration not only revitalized the physical structure but also rejuvenated the community spirit within.

Saint Joseph’s Church plays a vital role in the local community by catering to diverse congregations. It holds Mass in French on Sunday evenings and in English on Sunday mornings. Additionally, it conducts services in Arabic following the Maronite rite, thereby supporting a variety of communities within Beirut. Through these activities, the church continues to be a beacon of faith and resilience in the heart of the city.
