St. Margaret Church, York

St. Margaret Church, York

Saint Margaret's Church, located on Walmgate in York, is a historical Grade I listed building that has served various purposes throughout its extensive history. The church's origins trace back to the 12th century, with the Romanesque tunnel-vaulted south porch being the only remnant from this era, uniquely adorned with carvings of zodiac signs and the Labors of the Months.

The main body of Saint Margaret's, the nave, dates to the 14th century, while the vestry was added in the 15th century. A significant architectural event occurred in 1684 when the church's tower was rebuilt following the collapse of its predecessor. This tower, constructed of red brick, adds a distinctive feature to the church's profile.

In the 19th century, the church underwent major restoration under the direction of Thomas Pickersgill between 1851 and 1852. During this period, the north wall was extended outwards by two yards, the gallery was enlarged, a new floor was laid, the entire church was re-pewed, and a new roof was installed over the nave.

Despite these renovations, the congregation dwindled over time, leading to Saint Margaret's being declared redundant by the Church of England in 1974. For a period, it was used by the York Theatre Royal as a storage facility. However, in 2000, the building found a new lease on life as it was reopened by the National Centre for Early Music. It now serves as a vibrant venue for performances and conferences, contributing to the cultural tapestry of York.

Noteworthy too is the church's pipe organ, installed in 1855 by Ward, which was once a significant feature until its removal; details of the organ remain recorded in the National Pipe Organ Register.
