St. Mark's Lutheran Church, San Francisco

St. Mark's Lutheran Church, San Francisco

Saint Mark's Lutheran Church in San Francisco, is a vibrant Christian community that cherishes its roots in tradition while embracing new expressions of faith. This historic church, situated in the heart of the city, holds a special place in the region's religious heritage as it is the oldest Lutheran Church in the West.

The impressive red brick building, designed by the German-American architect Henry Geilfuss in 1894, showcases a striking combination of Romanesque Revival style on the exterior and Gothic Revival elements within its walls.

In 1906, a devastating earthquake hit San Francisco, leaving much of the city in ruins. Remarkably, Saint Mark's Lutheran Church sustained little damage despite the destruction. The church faced the threat of fires after the earthquake, but a strategic decision to dynamite nearby buildings saved it. During this time, the church provided refuge and support to the homeless and victims of the disaster.

In 2005, Saint Mark's Lutheran Church underwent an $11 million renovation for earthquake safety and improved facilities. The project was completed in December 2006, resulting in a beautifully revitalized church that preserved its charm while incorporating modern improvements. The grand reopening occurred during the joyous "Fling Wide the Doors" celebration, with added features like Heritage Hall, a nursery, and a kitchen to better serve the congregation.

Throughout the renovation, great care was taken to ensure that the exterior and sanctuary retained the essence of their 1895 appearance. The project meticulously preserved and restored the church's original features, such as stenciling, gilding, pew cushions, and a magnificent organ.
