St. Mary Magdalen Church, Brighton
Saint Mary Magdalen's Church is a Roman Catholic church located in the Montpelier area of Brighton, within the city of Brighton and Hove. The church, dedicated to Mary Magdalene, one of Jesus' companions, is one of six Roman Catholic churches in Brighton and one of eleven within the broader city area. Saint Mary Magdalen's Church was designated as a Grade II listed building by English Heritage on June 10, 1988, in recognition of its architectural significance.
The church was designed by the ecclesiastical architect Gilbert Blount in a 13th-century Gothic style, a popular choice for Blount's church designs. Constructed to serve the rapidly growing residential area bordering Brighton and Hove, the building is characterized by its red brick exterior with English bond patterning, complemented by decorative blue and black brickwork, and larger stone elements. The structure features a three-stage tapering tower crowned with a stone spire, and its layout includes a chancel, a five-bay nave, aisles, a vestry, and the tower, which also houses the entrance porch and door. The church is adorned with lancet windows featuring ornate tracery and intricate stone carvings on the exterior.
Between 2008 and 2010, the church underwent a reconstruction of the sanctuary, including new decorative lighting. This restoration aimed to return the church's appearance closer to its original state before the changes that followed the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council.
Saint Mary Magdalen's Church remains an active place of worship, with four Masses celebrated on Sundays. The second Mass is conducted in Polish, and the fourth is the Traditional Latin Mass. Additionally, two Masses are held on Holy Days of Obligation, and the Sacrament of Penance is available after each Mass and by appointment.
