St. Mary of the Angels Church, Cardiff
Located in the Canton area of Cardiff, Saint Mary of the Angels Roman Catholic Church is a notable historical and architectural landmark within the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cardiff. The church opened its doors on December 3, 1907, following the foundation stone laying on January 20, 1907, by Bishop Hedley. The design of the church was crafted by Frederick Walters, with construction managed by W. T. Morgan. Notably, the church's architecture is inspired by the late 12th-century French style, featuring roughly dressed Pennant sandstone and finely cut Bath stone ashlar dressings.
A significant addition to the church, the tower, was completed in 1916. Over the years, the church has faced its share of challenges and changes. It sustained damage during an air raid in January 1941, specifically to the sacristies and Saint Ann's Chapel, which were not restored until a decade later. Further renovations and upgrades were undertaken in the 1950s and 1960s, including repainting and the installation of modern lighting and sound systems.
In 1975, Saint Mary of the Angels was officially recognized as a listed building, highlighting its architectural significance and the quality of its construction under a noted ecclesiastical architect. In 1991, the church transitioned from Benedictine oversight to the direct care of the Archdiocese of Cardiff. It underwent an interior reordering in 2000 to better serve its congregation while maintaining its historic character.
Saint Mary of the Angels also plays a broader role in the local Catholic community, taking responsibility for the parish records of Sacred Heart, Leckwith, and Cardiff, and continuing to serve as a spiritual and community hub in the area.

Cardiff Introduction Walking Tour
