St. Mildred’s Church, Canterbury

St. Mildred’s Church, Canterbury

This old church was built before the Norman Conquest in the 11th century. Saint Mildred's Church is situated at the end of Stour Street, at a short distance from the Canterbury Castle. It was almost ruined by a fire in 1246, so most of the present structure is from the 13th century. The older part of Saint Mildred’s is the right-most section. The north aisle was adjoined in 1486. The southeast chapel was erected in the 1510s. The building comprises a nave, aisles and a chancel. It features the beamed roof of the 1300s, the font of 1420 with its original cover and lifting mechanism, Medieval woodcarvings, massive quoin stones and more. Notable people from Canterbury are buried in the church graveyard.
