St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Southampton
Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Southampton is just a short distance from the city center, offering a space for traditional Greek Orthodox services. Established in 1964, the church was built upon the efforts and contributions of the local Greek Orthodox community and was officially inaugurated on December 6, 1970. Before becoming a Greek Orthodox place of worship, it had a different history. Constructed in 1956 as the Church of England’s parish church of Saint James, the building replaced a 19th-century church destroyed during World War II. It transitioned to a Greek Orthodox church in 1965, following the establishment of the local Greek Orthodox community.
The church’s architecture features a red-brick exterior, a large tall window with a white cross above the entrance, and a high tower on its west side with a narrow window near the top. The community that maintains the church continues to uphold Greek Orthodox traditions and values while adapting to modern times. In addition to religious services, which are primarily conducted in Greek with occasional services in English, the church offers a range of activities including educational programs, community events, and the sale of religious items like icons, candles, and incense.
