St Pauls Tower, Sheffield

St Pauls Tower, Sheffield

Saint Paul's Tower is a skyscraper located on Arundel Gate in Sheffield. Construction of the tower began in May 2006, and it was completed in August 2010, reaching a height of 101 meters (331 feet), which made it the tallest building in Sheffield at the time, surpassing the University of Sheffield's Arts Tower.

The site of Saint Paul's Tower has historical significance, originally occupied by Saint Paul's Church, a chapel of ease for the nearby Sheffield Cathedral, from 1740 until its demolition in 1938. The church's demolition made way for Saint Paul's Gardens, adjacent to Sheffield Town Hall. In the 1970s, the area was further developed with two Brutalist-style extensions to the Town Hall, known as The Egg Box and The Wedding Cake, which housed Sheffield City Council offices.

Saint Paul's Tower project was granted in October 2005, with construction commencing officially in May 2007. The development includes 316 apartments, comprising a mix of one- and two-bedroom units, spread across the main skyscraper and an adjacent nine-story mid-rise building named Saint Paul's View. Both buildings are connected at ground level by retail space. Saint Paul's Tower is characterized by a conservatively modern design that complements its surroundings, including the historic Grade I listed Town Hall and the modern Winter Garden.

The ground floor of Saint Paul's Tower has been occupied by a Sainsbury's Local supermarket since July 2011. On the Saint Paul's View side, the retail spaces are split between two restaurants: Cosmo's and Pizza Express. The combination of residential and retail spaces makes Saint Paul's Tower a notable mixed-use development in the heart of Sheffield, contributing to the ongoing regeneration of the city center.
