St. Peter's Catholic Church, Melaka

St. Peter's Catholic Church, Melaka

Saint Peter's Church is a prominent historical landmark located in Melaka City. Established in 1710, it holds the distinction of being the oldest functioning Roman Catholic church in the country. The church was constructed by the local Portuguese Catholic community during a time when Melaka was under Dutch occupation.

The Portuguese ruled Melaka until 1641, when the Dutch took over, leading to the persecution of Catholics. Catholic worship was restricted, churches destroyed, and priests banned from administration. The War of the Spanish Succession prompted an alliance between the Portuguese and Dutch in 1703, easing restrictions temporarily. Maryber Franz Amboer, a Dutch convert, donated land for Saint Peter's Church in 1710, strategically located outside town walls to avoid conflict with Dutch authorities.

Architecturally, Saint Peter's Church is a blend of Eastern and Western styles. One of its notable features is a bell cast in Goa in 1608, which was salvaged from an older church destroyed by the Dutch. The facade of the church resembles that of the cathedral in Goa and Saint Paul’s Church in Macau, featuring two stories with three arched windows and a high gable. A tower on one side, which somewhat disrupts the building's symmetry, houses a statue of the Virgin Mary and a belfry containing the historic bell.

The interior of the church is modest, with a simple altar, a wooden vaulted ceiling, and several statues. The floor includes several gravestones, one of which is inscribed in Armenian, akin to those found in the nearby Christ Church. An interesting modern feature is the pool outside the church with fountains and a contemporary representation of a man walking on water, symbolizing the biblical story of Jesus inviting Saint Peter to walk on water as a testament of faith.
