St. Peter's Church, Leicester

Saint Peter’s Church is a Grade II listed parish church in the Highfields area of Leicester. As part of the Church of England, it serves a local congregation and holds historical and architectural significance.

The church was constructed as a memorial to Richard Curzon-Howe, 1st Earl Howe, and was initially known as the Howe Memorial Church. Its foundation stone was laid on 14 November 1872 by the Bishop of Peterborough. The architectural design was entrusted to the renowned George Edmund Street, a leading figure in the Gothic Revival movement. Following its completion, the church was consecrated on 18 April 1874 by the Bishop of Peterborough, officially opening its doors for worship.

George Edmund Street’s design reflects Gothic Revival architecture, characterized by pointed arches, intricate tracery, and stone craftsmanship. The church originally featured a distinctive spire, adding to Leicester’s skyline. However, in 1968, the spire was dismantled due to structural concerns.

Over the decades, Saint Peter’s Church faced significant deterioration. By 2014, the tower masonry and roof coverings were in critical condition, leading to its addition to the Heritage at Risk register. Recognizing its importance, restoration efforts began between 2018 and 2021, supported by funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Leicester City Council, the Diocese of Leicester, and the church’s resources. These repairs focused on restoring the tower, tower roof, stonework, and the main roof, ensuring the building’s preservation for future generations.

Saint Peter’s Church houses a Joshua Porritt pipe organ from 1875, modified in 1910 by Stephen Taylor & Son. Listed in the National Pipe Organ Register, it preserves its musical legacy. Despite challenges, restoration efforts have maintained the church as a symbol of faith, resilience, and heritage.
